The story goes ... in 2012 we began training our clients to shoot, edit and upload video, on and from their smartphones and tablets. It was new then - it's now mainstream.
Our clients:
" The whole team loved it and have learned so much. One of my team responded with 'Best. Workshop. Ever.'
High praise! You're an absolute legend and I'm sure we'll see you again. "

“Woo! Excited to make more videos now I’ve had a taste!
Really enjoyed the workshop, thank you Baz. I went home and finished my video and even added a backing track. It’s surprisingly easy, and the whole process is lots of fun. My friends were surprised how professional the video looked. Thanks so much Baz for your awesome tuition, advice, and tips, both on the day and all your follow up advice and ideas! Highly recommend for anyone looking to create videos…”

Baz came to the Riddet Institute to help a group of PhD students learn how to capture and condense complex technical research into simple stories. We learnt how to use our everyday technology (smart phones/tablets) as recording and editing equipment, and Baz shared some of his shooting tips and tricks for creating engaging content. Thanks to his clear delivery, passion and expertise, in half a day Baz somehow managed to turn a bunch of scientists into amateur film-makers!
The end results were both impressive and entertaining and we look forward to continuing to practice our new skills.
Thank you Baz for an excellent session!

"We have been so impressed with how much participants in these workshops gain over the course of just a few hours with Baz. The hands-on approach gets people shooting and editing videos straight away and builds their confidence enormously. They learn brilliant hacks and practical techniques for creating quality videos on their own smartphone. Having follow up support from Baz on-demand after the workshop finishes has proved a fantastic way to make sure they put their new skills to work. We've seen everything from crowdfunding campaigns to research projects publicised with videos as a direct result."

"Baz ran a really valuable smartphone video session for us at 2degrees. During the session Baz took us from the basics of video production and creating storylines on smartphones, through to editing. His range of exercises were fun but also really useful to move us from theory and into practical work in a short time."

"We all really enjoyed the course and learnt a lot thank you!
I’m pleased to say that I’ve made about three videos since our course (admittedly two were head and shoulder IV'ss – nothing special), but the point is we are producing and publishing them."

“A very valuable course for anyone in communications/marketing that wants (needs) to stay “up with the times.” Baz is engaging from start to finish, teaches probably a week’s worth of digital media in half a day, and ensures that time spent away from your desk is valued. I learnt a huge amount about making videos using just an iPhone, iMovie and Vimeo and was amazed with how far these free apps can get you.”
"They’re producing some awesome stuff already."

“We tasked Baz to develop Video Champions across our branches in support of our plan to ‘naturalise’ use of video as a comms tool. We chose him not because of his skills (taken as read) but his infectious enthusiasm and passion and his ability to engage our people and remove the perceived barriers in creating video on a smartphone. “

“Baz ran a workshop for our team at the Sustainable Business Network, which was fun, informative, practical and inspiring. In a short time he equipped us with the latest tricks of the trade and showed us all we needed to create videos ourselves on mobile phones. Baz is a fantastic teacher and extremely knowledgeable. I’d highly recommend his workshops for anyone – they are a lot of fun and incredibly informative.”

"The ANZ Corporate Affairs team was keen to learn to how to shoot, edit and upload short videos from our iPhones for use internally and on social media. Baz was pretty much the perfect man for the job. His enthusiasm, considerable expertise and good nature made for a very enjoyable couple of sessions and we all had a lot of fun making practice videos. We are now regularly producing snappy video content and improving every time."

"Baz's workshop was the most valuable course I've done in years. It was hands-on, fun and informative. The skills gained have already been put to good use by the communications and HR team members who attended. Video is a great way to tell our stories. We are looking to provide footage to local media, use short clips on our own intranet, website and social media. It's fast, and importantly, cost-effective as we can now record and edit in-house using tools we already have - our phones!"

“I have learnt such a lot from Baz. He has a wonderful teaching style and is always available to offer advice, tips and suggestions. Because of the time spent with Baz I now have the confidence and skills to take and make great iPhone videos. I am definitely a convert.”

"Baz and Harry were amazing. They helped a group of 15 teenagers and children get started with their iPhones for filming. That in itself is a struggle but they did it with ease and the techniques they learn't are now showing in the work they're producing. Amazing stuff guys!" Ngawaero Maniapoto Production Manager, 'Swagger', Raukatauri Productions “I loved working with Baz on our student testimonial videos. He has a great way with people, both behind and in front of the camera, gives advice when you need it but let’s you run and try out your own style as well. I thoroughly enjoyed our two-day one-on-one workshop and highly recommend it to everyone who is after a quick and easy way to produce high-quality video content.”
Sabine Kruekel Web Content Co-ordinator - Faculty of Science, University of Auckland "Baz is an accomplished creator of visual magic, and also a passionate - seriously mad, raving passionate - teacher. This combination makes him our first choice for conducting client video workshops. In an industry that's forced to reinvent itself, Baz is leading the way."
Simon Young Principal, Global Relations, syENGAGE Ltd, www.syengage.com "Baz provided a practical, hands-on workshop to people from our HR, Marketing, Internal Comms and Business Continuity units. His boundless enthusiasm and constructive critique made the day educational and fun, and unleashed the Francis Ford Coppola in all of us."
Ritsa Magiannis Head of Digital, Kiwbank "I’m pleased to be able to endorse the high quality services provided by Baz Caitcheon for the He Kākano team, when he upskilled us all in the use of Ipads and Iphones as tools to help school leaders engage with their school communities (through the use of film), as well as to video eight hour-long presentations and twenty three interviews in the space of two days. He set up a site to watch the presentations, interviews and the promotion video, and he has continued to provide excellent technical support to the team. Baz continues to be very timely in his responses to queries, and I have no hesitation in recommending him highly for his technical skills and support. We are all really pleased with the final products and look forward to working with him again."
Paora Howe Professional Operations Manager, He Kākano School Leaders Development Programme "Hi Baz, thanks so much for teaching us how to make video's with our iPhones. Who would have thought we could film and edit such high quality video from our iPhones. The course you took will save us thousands of dollars as well as allow us to update Instructional videos and share our company culture via video practically instantaneously. Money very well spent - I am looking forward to sharing my upcoming African experience with the team via Vimeo."
Peter Eastwood Founder/CEO, imake "We contacted Baz with a goal of making video content to enrich our website and convey some key messages for our client base. We had aspirations that far exceeded our budget. At our initial meeting - as well as agreeing to give us a quote for making a couple of five minutes videos, Baz also explained how he could work with us to teach us how to create our own videos as well -- giving us a potentially more sustainable way to continue to add video content to our site.
After initially contracting Baz to make our first two "excellence in practice" videos, we contracted him to work with us to make a third - teaching us how to use a variety of hand held devices, tips and suggestions for constructing a narrative, getting useful footage as well as stills and other video content to illustrate the messages in the interviews. After our 2 days of filming with Baz instructing us and guiding us, we later regrouped in our offices to learn how to use a variety of software to edit and polish our video. The process has been great as we've learned techniques for filming and some of the straightforward tools for video making as well as learning a great deal about the creative part of making the videos... Feedback from the videos Baz made has been fantastic. A great storyteller, Baz quickly understood what messages we were trying to convey and produced two outstanding videos. His professionalism, enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of every stage of production makes working with Baz a pleasure and a privilege." Lisa Oldham & Jo Buchan Development Specialists, National Library of New Zealand "We've only recently delved into the world of smartphones and Baz's half-day workshop was a fantastic introduction into just how smart these phones are! By the end of the session, our public health team was confidently shooting video, interviewing to camera and attaching accessories to the phones like professionals. We leaned an enormous amount about the phones with loads of tips and tricks to help get us started.
Having completed the tutorial, we all got very excited about the number of opportunities we now have, to create polished and professional video footage to use for events, activites and internal communication. It has opened up a whole new world for us and given us the confidence to actually get out there and be creative with our phones. Most importantly, doing any workshop with Baz is heaps of fun. I've worked with Baz a lot over the last few years from media training to filming at events, and have always had a lot of fun and learned heaps. Baz knows what he's doing, is professional, creative and very easy to work with. With Baz's guidance, we have now 'pimped up' our phones with tripods, microphones and other gear and are looking forward to showing off our new skills." Andrée Froude Marketing and Communications Director, Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand "Baz helped us identify a fun activity which would allow even novices to succeed in creating a digital teaching aid. Nothing succeeds like success and i was astounded at the enthusiasm which greeted the session. It was very hands on, witty and engaging and most of all useful. Baz approaches the work with a very positive spirit and manic energy which is just infectious. I thoroughly recommend his work which I have enjoyed for more than 10 years"
John Stansfield Head of Department of Social Practice, Unitec "The Department of Natural Sciences at Unitec recently contracted Baz to run a workshop for our academic staff on filming and editing video using mobile devices. His energetic, engaging and inclusive facilitation had even our most technologically challenged staffers filming, editing and publishing two impressive video clips complete with titles, transitions, cuts-away-to-stills, voice-over, and sound track, all within a fun and action packed morning.
All participants had high praise for the workshop with several commenting that it was the best they had ever done." Don Mardle Senior lecturer and eLearning Facilitator, Department of Natural Sciences, Unitec After our third workshop with Unitec, we received this breakdown & endorsement from the departmental head:
"Ten of our staff attended a workshop facilitated by Baz Caitcheon - he is a former high school teacher and a former project manager with TVNZ managing digital media and training journos in one-'man' interview and filming techniques. Baz now contracts to organisations as a film maker, and increasingly, runs workshops on filming and editing on mobile devices.
He bought a lot of peripherals for us to try - stabilising devices, lenses, external microphones, lights - demonstrating how to rapidly improve both audio and video. Although we focused on 'things Apple', Baz also covers android devices for those who are interested. Baz introduced interview and filming techniques and then sent us off in pairs to shoot video, stills, and to interview each other. He then walked us through the editing process using the iMovie app. Everyone was able to quickly create media that incorporated video, interview, stills, voiceovers, titles and transitions.. We uploaded these to Vimeo where we were able to view and critique the work of each pair. We then moved into a 'pimp-your-video' session where Baz concentrated on external mics, lighting (natural and artificial), and composition. We again shot video and stills and carried out interviews. After editing this second round of video it was also uploaded to Vimeo for critique. Everyone, including the most technologically challenged, achieved success. Our team loved the workshop, with several describing it as the best they have ever done. All are keen to 'go-home-and-practice', and all want to incorporate video into their teaching and research activities. My colleagues have also asked if our department will purchase some of the peripherals, and if they can do a second workshop with Baz. Therefore if you are considering an external provider to facilitate training in this area, we can unreservedly recommend Baz" "Baz and Harry ran a 4 hour workshop for the Board of Entrepreneurs' Organisation to help us implement our new communications strategy which is focused around video. Baz is very knowledgeable and an amusing and informed presenter. The interactive nature of the workshop was fun and the perfect way to learn, especially with Harry and Baz there to provide tips and advice 'on the fly'."
Kate O'Leary Board Member, NZ Entrepreneurs Organisation "The workshop was absolutely amazing. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and their learning. We would recommend this to ALL organizations. It is a great promotional tool that can be used for community groups, and businesses. The facilitators were fantastic. Amazing fun filled day. Thank you."
